What is math?  It can be compared to a very useful tool, like a hammer, or a collection of tools like a set of screwdrivers. A lot of kids get frustrated and bored with math, because many textbooks concentrate a lot on teaching the small, meticulous details of each and every type of tool.  That’s one of the fastest ways to kill your passion for something that could have otherwise been really useful!

Don’t get me wrong – you do need to know how to tell a hammer apart from a screwdriver. but can you tell me when to use the hammer instead of the screwdriver? It’s really important to focus on how and when to use the different tools. This is my practical approach to teaching the subject.

Most kids think math just means numbers, when the truth is that math is much more than just numbers and being good at multiplying! There are three main areas in math (at least when you first start out). Some kids enjoy adding and dividing, and for them, math is all about numbers.

However, if you’re really good with shapes and how they relate, then you might enjoy geometry. And if you are good at solving puzzles and people think you’re unbeatable at certain games, chances are that logic will be a great match for your skills. Let’s discover what math really is, and how we can use it in our everyday lives in a way that’s really useful.

  Shapes in Math If you’re bored with geometry, or can’t puzzle out why you should study it at all, then take a peek in here. You will discover freaky fractals, build a geometric pantograph, slice a Möbius strip, step through a sheet of paper, learn how to multiply by drawing a graph, and more!   Math Games These are my all-time favorite games to play, most of which don’t require any materials. In fact, I’ve even played Bagels standing in line at amusement parks (which always gets interested looks from others). You’ll learn how to play Hex, Dictionary, secrets of Scrabble, Magic Squares, my favorite dice game, and discover versions of Tic-Tac-Toe that never end in a tie game.
Logic Puzzles Logic Puzzles Simple and easy in appearance, these puzzles have made it through scores of students trying to figure out what’s really going on. I’ve presented by favorite logic puzzles here, including the Checkerboard Paradox and the deceptive Number Sequence.   Cryptography  Encode and decode some of the best secret codes, including techniques such as the Rail Fence, Twisted, Path, Date Shift, Pigpen, Polybius, and more. You’ll also learn how to decode substitution ciphers, and how to write unbreakable codes. I’ll also show you how to memorize absolutely anything using the hundred-year-old phonetic code.
