I picked up a load of flim canasters at the professional photo shop and there were plenty of fugi canasters. The Kodaks can be used for backpacking waterproof holders. (I know this comment is a little late, but maybe there are some slowpokes like me.

Skip the washing soda if you can’t find it and use baking soda instead. You’ll get a different acid/base level indicator, but it will still work okay in the experiment. (Though if you can find it, it’s worth picking up a box… you’ll probably only use it for this experiment for the next few years.)

  3. Aurora says:

Yes, that’s fine. This shopping list isn’t supposed to be a headache… most items are substitutable.

  4. Vicki Crockett says:

My local grocery store doesn’t know what washing soda is? Also, the best I can get for isopropyl alcohol is 70% – will that work? We’re excited to get started! Thanks!

  5. Aurora says:

The Kodak film canisters have the lip on the outer edge, and the Fuji ones have the lid that snaps into place on the inside. Hope this helps!

  6. Anne Horner says:

I can’t tell if my old film canisters are Kodak or not as they don’t have any labels on them and it’s so long since I bought film I can’t remember what brand I got! They are black, though, with tight-fitting grey lids. Will they work or do I need to track down something else?

My husband made a Word doc and PDF file of the shopping lists, feel free to download them from his website. Here’s the link:

It would be GREAT if the shopping lists were in a pdf. or a printer friendly version : ) I will look around the web site more, I may just have missed it when I scanned the site.

  9. Aurora says:

Yes, they are tricky to find. You can substitute a small plastic bottle with a snap-on lid or tight-fitting cork. Does this help?

  10. Deanna Betts says:

Hi- just thought I would mention that we were able to get a few free clear fuji film canisters from Target- at their film developing center. You might also be able to do the same.

  11. Andrew Close says:

The Fuji Film canister is a bit of tricky one. If we don’t have any (in this digital age) I assume we have to buy rolls of Fuji Film to get them?

  12. Magda Levin says:

Hi! where can I buy ONE Fuji film canister?
    thanks!

I’ve gotten a ton of emails about this shopping list – let me clarify:

How many Fuji film canisters? *ONE per child.*

How many trash bags? *ONE per child*

Naked straw??? No accordion feature? Clear? *A naked straw is a straw with the wrapper removed. If you can find a non-flexible straw, that will be best, but if bendy straws are all you have, just snip off the bendy part to make a shorter straw, which will still work just fine. (Don’t go out to the store just for a straw… but if you’re at a restaurant this week, just pick up a few extras.)*
